International Civil Society Week 2017 Brief 1: August -September 2017

Dear NLU, Partners and Friends,

Greetings from the PIANGO Secretariat. Preparations for the hosting of the International Civil Society Week here in Suva, Fiji are gaining momentum as we rapidly approach December!
As of September 18, 2017 logistical details that the team have managed to confirm are:

  1. University of the South Pacific Laucala Bay Campus, Suva, Fiji as the main venue for the week- long event
  2. Dates of the event: 4th – 8th December 2017
  3. CIVICUS’ ICSW coordinator, Andrzej Kostek continues to head a joint PIANGO-CIVICUS secretariat. Members of the local coordinating team include, special projects officer, Akmal Ali, Mavis Clerke and Anare Vuniwai. PIANGO anticipates a move into the USPSA allocated room to run the secretariat and coordinate ICSW activities by October 2017. Andrzej will then be in-country to lead operations. (PIANGO’s earlier updates shared our signing of a Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the USP and the USP Students Association in the mid 2nd quarter.)
  4. PIANGO executive director, Emele Duituturaga chairs the ICSW Local Host Committee (LHC) which meets fortnightly in Suva to advance ICSW preparations. Committee members include representatives from civil society such as the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS), Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFs), USP, USP Students Association, Coral Reef Alliance and Bua Urban Youth Network. PIANGO is pleased to note the support of Fijian government ministries and their participation in the LHC. These include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the iTaukei Affairs Board (TAB), Ministry of Health and the Department of Immigration. The Ministry of Youth is expected to join the LHC at its next meeting.
  5. USP Halls of Residence 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th have been booked to accommodate registered ICSW 2017 Delegates.
