Suva  – Pacific Islands Association of NGOs (PIANGO) has sent legal representatives to the Asia Climate Justice Expert meeting organised by Greenpeace.

PIANGO’s senior technical adviser, Laitia Tamata and PIANGO Legal Adviser Makereta Waqavonovono are currently in Bangkok, Thailand attending the second Asia Climate Justice Expert meeting alongside other climate justice experts from the Asian and Pacific regions.

Mr Tamata said the meeting would help climate lawyers to contribute to new climate justice legal initiatives at the national, regional and global level.

“And this can be done through establishing a new coalition of lawyers and advocacy organisations in Asia/Pacific.”

“This meeting is also exploring  preliminary case development including coordination and strategy; and developing synergies and linkages with similar actions in other countries and broader international legal, policy and campaigning being undertaken by the climate movement,” he said.

Apart from Fiji participants from the Pacific include PNG, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Solomon Islands and other international participants from Germany, Australia, the USA, the Netherlands, Canada and the United Kingdom.

They together with Asian participants have been deliberating on issues such as loss and damage, carbon majors operations in Asia/Pacific; Barriers to legal initiatives such as access to justice, corruption and campaigns and communications.

This meeting comes after the first Pacific Climate Justice Lawyers meeting organised by PIANGO and Greenpeace in Suva, Fiji in February 2016, which considered a legal case for taking Major polluters to court.
